You can either create them yourself or you upload an image to one of the various generators. Thanks to favicon-generator (no registration needed) I created a file favicon.ico, because you just can't rename any .jpg or other formats. That was the easiest thing.
Then you have to upload that file creating an url for it. That's where the problem starts because most hoster like imageshack or photobucket don't support that format. Solved that problem with google page creator and uploaded it there. But then? The next hint came from tips-for-new-bloggers because once the file was uploaded, it just that there, couldn't figure out a way to get it's url. In this post it says 1) hover over it and it shows. Well that didn't work, but right click on it and save the unseen (!) link worked just fine. 2.) once I put the link into the html-code of my blog I ended up with the favicon of google page creator. That's of course not the intention. Assumingly google page creator named theirs also favicon.ico. I forgot where I read that the file should have the name favicon.ico, but I decided to try xxxfavicon.ico and that worked just perfect. Last but not least thanks to blogger-tricks I found out what the html-code was like and where to put it:
