last fm

I started with finetune by coincidence and read about last.fm later on, also that it is supposed to be more complicated. I don’t think it is, it’s just different. You have to download software though and always when you listen to music from your pc (not if you listen to webradio from other pages), it creates a playlist. You can also tag the music and write comments about the artist if you like. From your music last fm also creates your personal charts and learns about your music taste too of course.

It’s community based as well. You can listen to other peoples radio and invite friends. You have neighbours too, based on the songs you listened to. They also offer a shoutbox, you can blog and write about events you’ll go or liked. You can create a so called taste-o-meter where you write down your favorite artists and compare them with others and find people that have the same taste in music.

The similarity is to create playlists which you can import to your blog or webpage in a player-widget. There are only slight differences concerning the restrictions of more than so many songs per artist per playlist or per timeframe and a minimum of 15 songs instead of 45 and you are not limited to the songs in their database because they scrobble whatever you hear on your pc. You can also upload your own music (if you have the copyright of course)

And like with finetune you can create a radiolist-widget when you name an artist and you’ll get a list with similar artists. Or a collage, that is a widget with all the covers from one artist and when people click on an album they can hear it. Also from your charts and from the taste-o-meter.

What I like is that you can either search for events in your neighbourhood or what music/artist you like and you can list one if you say are a DJ. On both sides you find a lot of information about artists (some more on last.fm it seems) and they suggest similar artists.
